After someone threw explosive devices at protesters in Laurelhurst Park, questions arise over police investigation
By K. Rambo | The Oregonian/OregonLiveAug 12, 2020;
Early Saturday morning after protesters were largely dispersed by police, a small group gathered at Laurelhurst Park. Then, around 2:30 a.m., video shows an explosive device being thrown at protesters and some members of the press.
The video didn’t show who tossed the three devices -- two of which detonated -- and no one was injured.
Photos from the scene show what appears to be a pipe with a bag of black powder removed from it.
Several videos shared on social media captured the incident, including footage of a man leaving the park carrying a military-style helmet with night vision goggles just after the explosions. Scott Keeler, an independent journalist who captured the footage, said he has not been contacted by police about the incident.
Since protests against police brutality and systemic racism began in Portland more than 75 days ago, Portland police have arrested hundreds of people. Some of those arrested were identified using footage of protests streamed on social media.
But with the Laurelhurst incident, police are calling for witnesses who saw the explosive devices thrown at protesters to come forward.
Police are facing criticism from activists for a perceived lack of action on the case, one of the latest attacks on protesters. On Aug. 4, a man drove his truck at a high speed through a demonstration area pushing a motorcycle that had been used as a barricade. The driver brandished a gun at protesters after they chased down his vehicle. Police said the driver was interviewed and released without charges.
A pickup truck was abandoned several blocks west after its driver accelerated towards the crowd, hitting and dragging a motorcycle. Portland protests continue for the 69th consecutive day Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020. A group gathered at Peninsula Park in north Portland in the evening and marched to the Portland Police Association building on N. Lombard just west of Denver Avenue. Police eventually declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, and then a riot. Dave Killen / staffThe Oregonian
Oregon Public Broadcasting reported Monday that the man seen on video carrying a military-style helmet and night vision goggles was identified by people who know him as retired U.S. Navy Seal and former CIA contractor Louis Gerrick Fernbaugh.
Police named Fernbaugh in a Tuesday release and said they “attempted to contact” him. In the release, police encouraged Fernbaugh to contact them.
It remains unclear if Fernbaugh is connected to the explosions at the park.
The release also asked people who spoke to the media to contact Portland police. Portland police spokesperson Lt. Greg Pashley said that while police are asking for witnesses to come forward, that doesn’t mean police aren’t also attempting to contact them.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Portland police had not released information about whether any arrests have been made connected to the incident. Pashley said he did not “have any info about specific risks to the public.”
Keeler, who witnessed the bombing and recorded the footage, told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Wednesday that he had not been contacted by Portland police, even after being quoted by OPB as a witness on Monday. Keeler said he saw Fernbaugh still in the park immediately after the bombing, prior to recording him outside the park.
Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Nathan Vasquez said his office is aware of the incident and is closely monitoring the investigation.
OPB reported that Fernbaugh has posted on social media about left-wing activists going back to at least 2018.
Fernbaugh recently said he had “infiltrated ANTIFA” at the protests downtown in a LinkedIn post. Fernbaugh’s company sells a target called “PDXANTIFA,” that is supposed to look like an anti-fascist activist, according to the product description.
OPB published a screenshot of a post on Fernbaugh’s Facebook page that mentioned an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory involving George Soros.
A call placed to Mayor Ted Wheeler’s office Tuesday was not returned at the time of publishing.

NATIVE OREGON ARTIST CALLS OUT WHIMPY GOV BROWN ON JORDAN COVE
Ka’ila Farrell-Smith writes on her Oregonian oped:
"I am an indigenous artist, based in Klamath County. Recently, Gov. Kate Brown invited me to show my art at her Salem office as part of the annual “Art in the Governor’s Office” program – an invitation they say is “considered a lifetime honor.” I declined.
I said “no” because Brown can’t have it both ways. She can’t support Oregon tribal members by showcasing our art while at the same time refusing to stand up for us when a huge fossil fuel company tries its very best to ram a fracked gas pipeline though our traditional lands—a pipeline that would threaten our sacred sites, the natural resources we have harvested for millennia and the safety of our women."

My published comment on the NYT reporting of the Mueller testimony
Michael Munk in Portland Ore
Your reporting is an effort to justify years of blaming Russia for your own failure to read the mood of the voters in 2016-- perhaps because of your heavy investment in Hillary's campaign.
I guess it has succeeded with the majority of your readers and commentators but next time devote some serious thought into reporting on the widespread racism and "no-nothingism" that corrupt so many of our fellow "deplorables."
How much time and energy has been wasted on this sorry diverting campaign? His opponents, of whom I am a militant one, could have devoted it all to actually fighting his despicable programs and policies.
It's not about Russia!

We urge people in the UK, US, Australia and around the world to protest the extradition and prosecution of Julian Assange at every step of legal proceedings. Popular Resistance will be doing all it can to build a broad movement for freedom for Julian Assange so he can continue his important work as a publisher and journalist. Assange has committed no crime and has had his political asylum, which has been recognized by the UN, taken away from him for no legitimate reason.
The prosecution of Julian Assange is an attack on Freedom of the Press in the 21st Century. WikiLeaks is democratizing journalism, redistributing power and increasing transparency. Publishing the truth is not a crime. The attack on Assange is a threat not only to journalism but opposition to war and empire. People need to stand up for Assange, our right to know and build a movement against US imperialism.
Wikileaks’ breakthrough journalism has been a public service that exposed US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan, human rights violations at the Guantanamo Bay prison and showed corporate corruption of US foreign policy in State Department cables. Wikileaks has published documents concerning governments and corporations throughout the world.
Wikileaks has democratized the media by creating the ability for people to expose crimes of governments and corporations by anonymously leaking documents that show their activities. This innovation gives power to people to be the media. Such power is essential at this time of corporate concentration of media, where six companies control 90 percent of the news.
Wikileaks documents have been covered in major news outlets like the New York Times and the Washington Post and have had an impact on the development of public policies.
The US and international courts should be prosecuting those who committed crimes exposed in the documents published by Wikileaks, not the media outlet who exposed the crimes.
Chelsea Manning, who leaked documents to Wikileaks, is being held for refusing to testify before a grand jury in Alexandria, VA. She refuses to testify in secret against Julian Assange. Manning should be released. Manning and Assange are sacrificing their freedom for our right to know
Yesterday, was the 30th Anniversary of the Whistleblower Protection Act (WPA). Beginning under President Obama and continuing under President Trump, whistleblowers are being arrested and charged with the Espionage Act at increasing levels. From the time the Espionage Act was passed in 1917 until the Obama administration took office, it was used against one person. Eight people were prosecuted by the Obama Department of Justice. The number of investigations of leaked information has tripled under the Trump administration.

"Because a sustainable future depends on the people willing to see the truth for what it is, and for those to stand up in unison in order to make a difference." — Jake Edwards Keli'i Eakin
I may be (wrongly) denounced as a Trumpist for posting this, but I wouldn't mind hearing some leading Dem political leaders express similar emotions --though more coherently -- to a national audience-mm
TRUMP (excerpts) to MARGARET BRENNAN (CBS):
"I think the people out in the world- I think people in our country agree. We've been fighting for 19 years. Somebody said you were precipitously bringing to- precipitously? We've been there for 19 years. I want to fight. I want to win, and we want to bring our great troops back home. I've seen the people. I go to Walter Reed Hospital. I see what happens to people. I see with no legs and no arm- arms. And I've seen also what happens to them up here because they're in this situation, and they come back and they are totally different people-- where the wives and the fathers and the mothers say, "What has happened to my son? What has happened in some cases to my daughter?" It's a terrible thing. We've been there close to 19 years. And it's time. And we'll see what happens with the Taliban. They want peace. They're tired. Everybody's tired. We'd like to have- I don't like endless wars. This war. What we're doing is got to stop at some point.
So when Obama did what he did in Iraq, which was a mistake. Being in Iraq was a mistake. Okay. Being in Iraq- it was a big mistake to go- one of the greatest mistakes going into the Middle East that our country has ever made. One of the greatest mistakes that we've ever made-- President Bush had intel people that said Saddam Hussein in Iraq had nuclear weapons- had all sorts of weapons of mass destruction. Guess what? Those intel people didn't know what the hell they were doing, and they got us tied up in a war that we should have never been in. And we've spent seven trillion dollars in the Middle East and we have lost lives--"

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute capitulates to Israel First nutcakes
Michael Marriot writes in The Root"
"One of the nation’s most prominent civil rights museums has reneged on its plans to celebrate one of America’s most outspoken freedom fighters, igniting a national controversy after seemingly genuflecting to grumbles from the area’s Jewish community.
On Jan. 4, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute released a weirdly nonspecific statement canceling its plans to bestow the institute’s highest honor upon Angela Davis, a Birmingham, Alabama, native. The ceremony was supposed to serve as the centerpiece of the museum’s annual gala, planned for Feb. 19."

US Israel isolated on Cuba in UN
Jane Franklin writes:
"First time in a long time but this is a special occasion to make sure you know about the latest UN General Assembly vote regarding the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba on November 1. There are 193 voting members. 189 voted against the U.S. embargo after first voting against U.S. amendments. Only two countries -- the U.S. and Israel -- voted for continuing the embargo. Moldova and Ukraine did not vote. There were no abstentions. This is of course once again a great victory for Cuba and all the people in the world who oppose the outrageous embargo. I could not find a mention of this vote in The New York Timesbut San Francisco Chronicle had an article about it.Congratulations to all concerned! "
ID politics, torture and Kavanaugh
In recent US politics, the rule is that identity politics trumps all other critical issues. The Kavanaugh trial just ended is another example: He should be denied membership on the Supremes for many reasons but one unremarked on by the Dems is that he is an enabler of torture by the US government. But his opponents, knowing what has traction in our political culture, have taken that issue off the table and made his sexual history the issue that hides what is arguablity more relevant to his role on the Supremes..-MM
To this point, JoAnn Wypijewski writes in Counterpunch:
"For anyone who still cares about principle, the Kavanaugh case is not a matter of belief, nor will it come down to proving or disproving Ford’s allegations. The Senate confirmation process is not a court of law. It is, however—in theory if not in fact—an arena for considering the problems and promise of justice, for taking the measure of a man, in this case, and his capacity to think deeply, to search bravely, to act humanely, beyond the limit of mere ambition. Ford’s intervention puts the hard stuff of humanity at the center of that arena, something that has been absent, most strikingly in the Senate’s challenge to Kavanaugh’s greatest ethical failure: his response to torture. For reasons probably of racism (and partly the nature of sex scandal) torture has never raised the temperature of politics or the public to the same fever as sexual accusation. Ford’s entrance and her story, which is so particularly human, so simple yet complex, so weighty with moral dimension, call the profound questions on that subject. (Whether they will have that effect on the Senate is doubtful.)

For David McReynolds
Thinking about my old friend and comrade David McReynolds dead at 88/9 after a fall in his LES apartment.
We first met in the early 60s when I worked on the old National Guardian and he stood out to me by insisting most radicals, despite their frequently sectarian, splintering and isolating tactics, were still essentially members of a broader Left community.
We argued and agreed in most every year since and I looked forward to his political visits to Portland after retiring and leaving the East. There weren't many recently, but we kept up lively exchanges on email.
I mourn David as a model American radical and enthusiastically endorse his advice to us old timers:
It is about realizing we — those of us in our 80s — will be here for a while, and need to treat ourselves with a bit of discipline. We are needed, not to complain but to resist, to use the wisdom we have gained, often at a steep price, to stand for sanity in our world, and for a sense of compassion in our relationships.”
Mike Munk
The NYT times and lesser media are shamelessly cheerleading her recent speech which is only an old fashioned defense of US imperialism and an effort to get neocon support by framing Trump as an danger to the "World Order". In fact, the only difference between them is that Hillary relies on the military to defend the empire while Trump seems to prefer using economic muscle. -MM

In the name of Allah, the …beneficent, the merciful…
No, no matter what I did, it was never enough for some, but for others, they knew I was the son of Gamal Abdel Nasser, the only true Arab and Muslim leader we’ve had since Salah-al-Deen, when he claimed the Suez Canal for his people, as I claimed Libya, for my people, it was his footsteps I tried to follow, to keep my people free from colonial domination – from thieves who would steal from us.
Now, I am under attack by the biggest force in military history, my little African son, Obama wants to kill me, to take away the freedom of our country, to take away our free housing, our free medicine, our free education, our free food, and replace it with American style thievery, called “capitalism” ,but all of us in the Third World know what that means, it means corporations run the countries, run the world, and the people suffer.
So, there is no alternative for me, I must make my stand, and if Allah wishes, I shall die by following His path, the path that has made our country rich with farmland, with food and health, and even allowed us to help our African and Arab brothers and sisters.
I do not wish to die, but if it comes to that, to save this land, my people, all the thousands who are all my children, then so be it.
Let this testament be my voice to the world, that I stood up to crusader attacks of NATO, stood up to cruelty, stoop up to betrayal, stood up to the West and its colonialist ambitions, and that I stood with my African brothers, my true Arab and Muslim brothers, as a beacon of light.
When others were building castles, I lived in a modest house, and in a tent. I never forgot my youth in Sirte, I did not spend our national treasury foolishly, and like Salah-al-Deen, our great Muslim leader, who rescued Jerusalem for Islam, I took little for myself…
In the West, some have called me “mad”, “crazy”, but they know the truth yet continue to lie, they know that our land is independent and free, not in the colonial grip, that my vision, my path, is, and has been clear and for my people and that I will fight to my last breath to keep us free, may Allah almighty help us to remain faithful and free.
-Mu’ummar Qaddafi.
May Allah 4give and grant you with Jannatul firdaus. Ameeen
