http://www.ThePortlandAlliance.org/hardtimes Portal To Hard Times"Hard Times, USA," a multi-part series on the economic problems which plague America -- from the 138 million people who live paycheck to paycheck to the 40 million living at, or below the poverty level, to the one million (plus however many more) who are homeless, live in cars, etc. Out of 150 countries in the world, only three have greater wealth disparity than we do here in the United States. I'm sure you agree with me that this vast gap is totally unacceptable. If any of you have any ideas, articles, writers, suggestions for helping us make sure this series has an impact, please write me at Feedback@alternet.org, Here are some of the articles: Laws all over the country are designed solely to target the homeless. There are better solutions. - By Tana Ganeva A huge number of Americans feel vulnerable every day of every week, their future unknown. What are you going to do about it? - By Don Hazen Renee Miller was sexually propositioned by a staff member immediately upon arrival, and that was just the beginning. - By Renee Miller Instead of investigating and intimidating families without a permanent home, what if we gave them a place to go? - By Alex Kane Thought debtor prison ended in the 18th century? Think again. - By Alex Kane A woman who uses drugs can be punished just for the assumption that using drugs has harmed her fetus. - By Kristen Gwyne People may say they want to help the homeless, but their behavior reveals something else. - By Alyssa Figueroa From 2008 to 2011, metals stolen for resale to recyclers rose 81 percent nationwide. - Evelyn Nieves Life on San Francisco’s streets for women over 50 is filled with hardships, small and large. - By Rose Aguilar "I’ve been homeless and mostly living outside ... Nobody should have to sleep outside. I mean that." - By Kenan Heise Paul Boden, a homeless rights advocate for 30 years, is helping groups around the country draft legislation to help the homeless. - By Evelyn Nieves "People have only as much liberty as they have the intelligence to want and the courage to take.” Emma Goldman The officers involved were not punished for this crime. Chief Potter essentially blamed the victim. (the mentally ill) The officers who kicked, punched, and beat James to death (in front of 12 witnesses) were neither disciplined nor prosecuted. There was zero accountability for this crime. And the killings continue. tmf
