9/17 Day of Action in Solidarity with Colombian GM Workers on Hunger Strike
September 17

  • UPDATE--Join an International Day of Action in solidarity with Colombian GM workers on hunger strike.

9/17 will mark two weeks of hunger striking by these brave workers demanding justice.

Support them by joining protests at GM headquarters, at CEO Dan Akerson's home and at other sites around the country. Participate in your community by visiting your local GM dealership or fasting for the day.

ASOTRECOL, the association of injured Colombian workers who were wrongfully fired by GM due to workplace injuries, announced that their sixth attempt at mediation with GM Colmotores in Colombia ended without a settlement.

These workers urgently need your help to ensure that GM returns to the negotiating table, this time with an offer in hand that meets their simple demands: just compensation for their workplace injuries and reintegration into GM’s workforce or an acceptable financial settlement.

Take Action: Mediation Fails, Injured Colombian GM Workers Re-Start Hunger Strike

ASOTRECOL, the association of injured Colombian workers who were wrongfully fired by GM due to workplace injuries, announced that their sixth attempt at mediation with GM Colmotores in Colombia ended without a settlement.

The workers announced that they re-started their hunger strike, suspended pending the outcome of mediation, on September 3. Read our press release for more information.

These workers urgently need your help to ensure that GM returns to the negotiating table, this time with an offer in hand that meets their simple demands: just compensation for their workplace injuries and reintegration into GM’s workforce or an acceptable financial settlement.

Here's how you can help:

  1. Join our rolling fast, starting September 3rd, in solidarity with these workers on hunger strike. You can sign up here.

  2. Send a letter to GM, Congress, the Department of Labor and the U.S. Ambassador in Colombia urging them to immediately take action to resolve this situation. Click here to send your message today.

  3. Join us in Detroit starting Wednesday, September 5, for an ongoing protest and hunger strike calling on GM to immediately re-start negotiations with the workers. Come for an hour, a day or a week. We will be there until a resolution is reached. Email jess@witnessforpeace.org for more information if you can join us.

  4. Take a letter to your local GM dealership expressing your concern about the situation of Colombian GM workers and ask them to communicate your concerns to GM in Detroit. These dealerships are locally owned, but they can help us get the message to GM in Detroit that people around the country are watching this situation closely. Download a sample letter to print out and bring to your dealership here.

  5. Stay tuned. We are currently planning a National Day of Action in support of these workers and will ask you to join us. Check back here and/or follow us on Facebook to get important updates.
