We're
proud to announce that the Community Alliance Against Coal and Portland
Rising Tide have merged to stop fossil fuel infrastructure from being
built in the NW and we want you to join us.
Portland Rising Tide is hosting an orientation to learn more about
our work and how to get involved. During this gathering we will discuss
the onslaught of fossil fuel export terminals proposed in our region. We
will talk about the work of Rising Tide to oppose these terminals,
climate justice and direct action and how you can plug-in as an organizer and a participant.
There are now nine proposals to export fossil fuels from Oregon and
Washington including tar sands, 'natural' gas, coal and oil. As climate
justice activists, we know that these proposals must be stopped and
we're pretty sure you agree. The big non-profits are doing a good job
for now, but as we've seen with the Keystone XL Pipeline, their actions
only go so far. And with 9 proposals in our back yard, we can't take
that chance, we've got to build a community and network of resistance
now. So please check out the two upcoming events:

PDX Rising, 2011 by Greg Margolis
April 16, 2011: Portland, Oregon: More than 2500 everyday people
joined organized labor and peace and justice communities to rally
in Pioneer Square and march through downtown Portland on April 16, 2011.
They came to protest cuts to public services and nationwide attacks on
unions, and demanded greater job-creation by developing a federal
public works program.
Dave King of the Climate Justice Coalition commented:
“There are millions of Americans unemployed,
underemployed and underpaid, and with the attacks on organized labor by
the corporate right, the need for a national public works program is
becoming increasingly apparent.” ...
We need to protect the jobs we have and create millions of
new jobs to repair the infrastructure and create a 21st century economy
focused on reducing our reliance on fossil fuels by retrofitting our
homes and buildings, improving and expanding public transportation, and
developing new models for our neighborhoods that will provide a healthy
future for our children. Further we need to address the global crisis of
food and water security where the devastating effects of climate change
are drying up rivers and melting glaciers in the Andes, Himalayas and
elsewhere.
At the “Portland Rising” rally, Portland-area labor leaders and
community members warmed up a packed Pioneer Square with chants of “Good
Jobs for all” until the featured speaker Mahlon Mitchell, president of
the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin, took the stage. Mitchell
gained national prominence when he led the firefighters into the capitol
to protest Scott Walker’s attacks on working people, and proclaimed,
“When firefighters see an emergency, we respond.”
Maureen Crawford, Portland based SEIU 503 Community Organizer
commented, “Locally, there are 11 unions facing contract negotiations
and we are standing together to say no to the continuing attacks on our
rights to collectively bargain for decent wages and benefits for our
families. One of the really exciting aspects of the rally was the
solidarity between unions and the mutual demand by the community and
unions that everyone deserves a family wage job and that social safety
net programs need to be protected and strengthened, not cut.”
“Communities are recognizing the need to protect vulnerable
families from homelessness, hunger and other symptoms of poverty by
strengthening rather than cutting programs such as Temporary Assistance
for Needy Families (TANF). I have experienced homelessness and many
others are suffering this same indignity. The wealthiest nation in the
world should not allow conditions that leave its people in these
impoverished circumstances,” said Ibrahim Mubarak of the homeless
advocacy group Right to Survive.
“I lost my job due to outsourcing that was the result of bad ‘free
trade’ policies and now the President and Congress are pushing to pass
more job killing Bush negotiated agreements with South Korea, Columbia
and Panama.
We need a fair trade model like the ‘Trade Act’ that will serve the
interests of workers rather than multinational corporations,” said
software engineer Mitch Besser.”
Following Mahlon’s inspiring address, demonstrators streamed out of
the square and looped through downtown, first stopping at the U.S.
Bancorp Tower to protest exorbitant fees that U.S. Bank charges users of
its Reliacard, which unemployment benefit recipients are required to
use to access their accounts. The procession also stopped in front of
the Portland Hilton to show solidarity with hotel workers from UNITE
HERE, whose contract expires June 30. The march ended at Terry Schrunk
Plaza.
The demonstration was organized by the workers’ rights organization
Portland Jobs with Justice and co-sponsored by over 60 local unions,
faith-based organizations and community groups. For more information
about the continuing campaign for jobs not cuts, contact Portland Jobs
with Justice organizer Chris Ferlazzo at (503) 236-5573 or e-mail chris@jwjpdx.org.

BREAKING NEWS AT THE ALLIANCE:
SYSTEM GRAVELY BROKEN:
RESPONSES TO CHASSE DISCIPLINE REVERSAL
The two officers who had been disciplined in the brutal beating death of James Chasse, Jr. were ordered to have their
records expunged and back payments made for the 80 hours each was suspended.
As long as we continue without police accountability in Portland,
avoidable killings of innocent people will continue.
