Cathedral Park Jazz Festival

July 17th, 18th & 19th

Cathedral Park Jazz Festival

The Cathedral Park Jazz Festival is 35 years old in 2015! This is the oldest continuous free jazz festival west of the Mississippi River and we are proud of that. While the organization which produced the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival for the past two years has dissolved, ownership of the festival has been turned over to the Jazz Society of Oregon. This is an exciting opportunity for JSO. Our mission includes supporting jazz performance. We are currently seeking sponsors to help finance the festival this year and we are gratified by the support we are receiving in this endeavor. Local businesses and community organizations are strongly behind it. PDX Jazz and KMHD have offered to partner with making this happen. Key individuals involved in producing recent festivals have come forward to help make it happen again. Contact us at info@cpjazz.com to let us know how you can help, and stay tuned to this website for updates on the festival.

St John’s Cathedral Park, Portland, Oregon

As usual, during the third weekend of July, thousands of music fans and qualified people of leisure will be gathering under the St. Johns Bridge to revel in jazz and blues at the longest-running free jazz festival west of the Mississippi. This year’s prominent local acts include Tom Grant, Jessie Marquez, and Portland’s celebrated post-jazz ensemble the Blue Cranes.

Blues Night is Back! Enjoy the New Orleans-influenced Roseland Hunters featuring a big band and March Fourth brass players, and Norman Sylvester with his six-piece electric blues band.

Saturday’s headliners will also feature two famous PDX jazz educators, Stan Bock and the New Tradition, plus Chuck Israel’s Jazz Orchestra.

Sunday becomes eclectic with domestic and international highlights including a West Coast introduction to the impressionistic compositions of Eri Yamamoto Trio of New York City, and United States debut of the energetic Ventura Trio, from Sao Paulo. The progressive Brazilian Trio will launch their West Coast tour at CPJazz 2013.

Multnomah County Cultural Coalition has also granted funds to create a new education branch of CPJazz Engagements, like workshops, film, and talks. All of these will be hosted at The Colony, an exciting new multi-purpose space in a historic landmark building.
