"We Cannot Remain Silent" on Palestine, Says Activist From Jewish Boat to Gaza

By Mark Karlin

"Sunday, 25 October 2015 00:00 By Mark Karlin, Truthout | Interview:

In Survival and Conscience, Lillian Rosengarten tells her story, and it's a remarkable one: escaping Nazi Germany and fleeing to the United States in 1936, overcoming the toll which the legacy of Nazi oppression took on her family's health, and becoming a strong advocate of Palestinian rights. Philip Weiss of Mondoweiss calls this book "a brave and wrenching account that is also deeply necessary."

Truthout recently interviewed Lillian Rosengarten about what brought her to sail on the Jewish Boat to Gaza in an effort to break the Israeli siege.

Mark Karlin: What is the central issue of justice for you that, ironically, draws a line from the Nazi attempt to annihilate the Jews of Europe to the brutality of the Israeli government toward the Palestinians?

Lillian Rosengarten: First, it is vitally important to make a distinction between traditional Judaism and political Zionism. Although Zionism began as a liberation movement, it is now a racist, nationalistic and criminal state that operates in the name of Jews. This is a catastrophe. Israel's Zionist goal is a Judaization of Israel that denies the existence of Palestinians. I am opposed to all nationalistic racist regimes that occupy and disenfranchise another people.

How did your family escape the Nazis?

My father saw the handwriting on the wall after he was beaten by the "brownshirts." In the early years of Hitler's rule, when some Jews were still allowed to leave, he attempted twice to get a visa for his family from the US. The visa was difficult to get because there was a strict quota system in the US. One was required to have a "sponsor," a secure job and housing to be allowed to enter the United States. Fortunately, he finally succeeded.

“Ever since the creation of democratic nations – where public opinion somewhat matters – the political class is faced with a dilemma: War is needed to gain power, riches, and control, but the general public has a tendency to be against it. What to do? The answer was found decades ago and is still used successfully today: Create an enemy so terrifying that the masses will beg their government to go to war.

National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week

What is H&H Awareness Week?

NHHAW TWITTER SIZE

November 14-22, 2015

National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week is held each year the week before Thanksgiving. This is a time for us all to start to think about what we are thankful for, a perfect time to share our compassion with our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness, and work toward a world where no one has to experience Hunger and Homelessness. H&H week offers the chance to contribute to a national social movement. NCH’s aim is and always will be to eradicate homelessness by solving the root causes of it. We aim for activism in this vein. For this year’s H&H week we are focusing on the laws passed by local governments around the nation which prevent people experiencing homelessness from doing life-sustaining activities. Let’s bring light to this issue, pressure lawmakers and Bring America Home together!

Week 5: We are coming out to protest the sweeps EVERY WEDNESDAY for the next 4 weeks. We will be wearing signs that say STOP THE SWEEPS at the City Council meeting.

The police sweeps of houseless encampments continues here in Portland and across the country. People with nowhere else to go are being displaced, ticketed and convicted. The lack of available affordable low income housing is a major issue for thousands of people living in poverty.

Come support us, with a 15 minute pep talk starting at 9am followed by attending the City Council meeting with your own STOP THE SWEEPS sign!

Police chases kill more people each year than
floods, tornadoes, hurricanes and lightning — combined

This week Zachary Crockett of the Priceonomics blog highlighted some eye-popping statistics on high-speed police pursuits -- you know, the kind that you see on COPS, or that local TV crews chase using helicopters.  read the rest of the story:

“The group, led by Denver Homeless Out Loud and composed of house-less people and supporters, had been constructing tiny homes and trying to find a location for the village for over a year. But due to zoning and code constraints they have not been able to find a legal place to put the houses… In explaining why they had chosen this site on which to establish the village, the group recounted how the Denver Housing Authority, which owns the property, has torn down hundreds of low income housing units, and after allowing the Urban Farming Cooperative to use the land for a few years, has agreed this year to sell the land to a private developer, who will build multifamily housing that will support gentrification in Curtis Park but be far beyond the reach of those for whom the Denver Housing Authority is supposed to exist.”

After darkness fell, heavily armed Denver police arrested 10 people and the tiny homes were ripped apart and loaded onto trucks, a mass expense considered more important than finding affordable cheap shelter for residents.

From November 14-18 people across the country will converge on Washington DC for action to demand an end to global corporate domination and the TPP, TTIP, and TiSA.

The United States is negotiating three massive international treaties–the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the TransAtlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Trade-in-Services Agreement (TiSA). These agreements, whose contents are classified secrets, will expand global corporate power, harming the planet and people everywhere and destroying democracy.

People around the world are rising against the corporate "trade" agenda. Now it is our turn. This November 14-18, during the APEC meetings in the Phillipines, people from many different backgrounds and movements will come together in Washington to demand that the first of these deals, the TPP, be stopped and an alternative international economic agreement that puts people and the planet first be negotiated in a transparent and democratic way.

Checkout the newest information on challenging the TPP!                http://www.ThePortlandAlliance.org/tpp

The TPP, TTIP, & TiSA are much bigger than trade–only 5 of the 29 TPP chapters even deal with trade. They are corporate power grabs that impact every aspect of our lives. If passed, they would take away environmental protections, offshore American jobs & decrease wages, remove food safety laws, curtail internet freedom, inhibit access to lifesaving medicine, spur further financial deregulation and more.

The TPP impacts people of color, the poor, and oppressed communities most. The TPP, and other secret treaties under negotiation, would expand US empire, white-supremacy, and corporate capitalism. These treaties would further privatize schools and prisons, allowing the ruling class to profit from the destruction of black and brown communities. They would increase human and sex trafficking, forced migration, and the ongoing genocide of indigenous peoples. All of this would be upheld by more repressive policing and military intervention as we are already seeing throughout the TPP zone in the United States, Latin America, and East Asia.

Bring your message and campaign to DC this November. Let's unite all of our struggles for a new world.

The Parking Meter Debacle

"Court says parking meters unlawful.

Declares meters to be like a criminal conspiracy.

City officials in a dilemma.”

What would your reaction be to the above headline if it appeared in your local newspaper? Would you be confused or elated? Would you want to read the details more thoroughly? “Criminal conspiracy?” Those words sound serious. What may be going on here?
