"The nonstop and perennial obsequiousness of many politicians and media to the US military is objectionable to those who have been occupied, hurt, raped and otherwise assaulted by the US military. Analyst John LaForge asks for some balance." T.H.

10 More Years in Afghanistan
By David Swanson
When Barack Obama became president, there were 32,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan. He escalated to over 100,000 troops, plus contractors. Now there are 47,000 troops these five years later. Measured in financial cost, or death and destruction, Afghanistan is more President Obama’s war than President Bush’s. Now the White House is trying to keep troops in Afghanistan until “2024 and beyond.”

On Monday August 12, 2013 the City of Portland was about to have a new and exciting addition to its public art collection. Cannon Dill, a highly regarded artist from San Francisco was visiting Portland. He is known for incredibly detailed black and white aerosol murals of enchanting wolf-like creatures and his murals can be seen in cities across the country, including Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Oakland, Brooklyn, Kansas City, Minneapolis, and New Orleans. His artwork is usually welcomed and celebrated as invigorating dull walls and dilapidated urban environments. However, to our dismay, it was met with contempt in Portland.

The mass civil disobedience against Walmart's poverty wages in LA Thursday night has captivated the national media and stirred the souls of workers everywhere. The movement to raise wages is escalating rapidly. On Election Day, the Seattle suburb of SeaTac voted for a $15 minimum wage. On Thursday, Sen. Tom Harkin and President Obama called for a $10 minimum wage, tied to inflation, with a substantial raise for tipped workers. Many people said the Black Friday Walmart protests last year didn't work....they had no idea what they were talking about. It was simply the first salvo in a years-long campaign to end working poverty, and now the tables are starting to turn.
Retired state worker Jack Herbert was among seven activists arrested at Portland, Oregon's main post office Tuesday. The "postal protectors," armed only with more than a thousand petition signatures, were attempting to negotiate a meeting to discuss an end to privatization of postal jobs. For the sixth time since August, they were turned away. Eleven protesters invaded the office space of Portland’s senior US Postal Service management today. Slipping past security barriers on the third floor of the Main Post Office, the group occupied the hallway outside the offices of Brenda Jackson, transportation manager for the Portland district. Demanding a meeting with Jackson, the so-called “postal protectors” insisted that management stop subcontracting the trucking of “the people’s mail.”
