Dana Crane, a senior at Lewis and Clark College majoring in Environmental Education, spoke with reporter

 

Brittany Wilson. Crane's an active member of the City Repair Project, coordinator for the Village Building Convergence, and is active in the climate change movement. She’s currently writing a thesis on urban agriculture education and hopes to inspire the community to sustain itself by producing its own food anywhere in the city.

Q: What's your favorite restaurant that serves up local, organic food?
A: Chaos Cafe at 2620 SE Powell Blvd. They make really delicious vegan and vegetarian food. They also have incredible brunch. I love the Big Bang breakfast which comes with herbed tofu and eggs.

Q: What's your favorite “best bang for your buck” spot?
A: Old Wives' Tales at 1300 E Burnside. The atmosphere is really welcoming and joyous and they have a great buffet-style soup and salad bar. The Hungarian Mushroom soup is great and only $3.50 a cup.

Q: What's your favorite happy hour spot?
A: Old Town Pizza at 226 NW Davis St. They have $1 slices of pizza and $2 PBR and wells.

Q: What's your favorite place to grocery shop?
A: During the spring, summer and fall I love the Hollywood farmer's market and the market at 20th and Salmon. During the winter I shop at the Alberta Street Co-op and People's Co-op. I also grow my own vegetables.

Q: What advice would you give to a Portlander who wants to grow their own food in the city?
A: Find a neighbor with a garden and ask for advice, so you can see how it's being done. When you plant your own, plant an extra row for the hungry, and donate it to the local food bank.

Q: What else can Portlanders do to support local farmers?
A: Shop at the farmer's markets! Get a few friends together and buy a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) share, and you'll have fresh local produce delivered to your door.
Q: Any final words of food wisdom?
A: It's essential that people avoid factory farmed food because of its dependence on fossil fuels. Always know where what you eat comes from. Food is our strongest link to the earth.
